ABOUT VIEQUES
PHOTO ALBUM

The island of Vieques -- also known as "Isla Nena" or "Little Sister Island"-- is approximately 15 miles east of the main island of Puerto Rico. Just 21 miles long and four miles wide, the island has two towns -- Isabel Segunda and the small seaside village of Esperanza -- beautiful beaches to explore, and one of the most vibrant bioluminescent bays where an evening visit offers the remarkable sight of water illuminated by single-celled organisms that emit a flash of bluish light when the water is agitated. Fanned by the prevailing easterly trade winds, it has a sub-tropical climate with an average temperature of 77 degrees in December and 81 degrees in June.

Having driven the U.S. Navy out in 2003, Vieques has for the most part resisted outside and commercial forces and retains a slow-paced, friendly atmosphere. There are a number of great bars and fine restaurants, along with grocery stores, a vegetable stand, and even a small health food store. Activities on the island include beach combing, snorkeling, sailing, charter fishing, visiting the bioluminescent bay, and yoga. Cultural offerings include an historic fort with a cultural center, lighthouse museum, town plaza and occasional performances at various venues along with openings at local galleries. But as many would attest, it is exploring the natural beauty of the remote beaches and encounters with locals which makes Vieques so transporting.
